Bulldog Attacked by Wild Animal

Bulldogs are built tough, which explains why you see them so often used as mascots for football teams and Mack trucks. But that didn’t stop something from leaving this 80 pound English bulldog, aptly named ‘Diesel’, lying in a puddle of his own blood yesterday morning.
This big boy was hanging out in the backyard that evening when owner, Rodney Powers, headed off to work the graveyard shift.
Rodney’s wife, Christina, found Diesel when she got home from her shift at 11am on Wednesday.
Screaming after seeing how much blood he’d lost, she rushed him into the house and tried to wash the blood off in the bathroom tub.
From the nasty slashes all over his body it was obvious that the bulldog had been severely mauled by some kind of wild animal, possibly a bobcat, and Christina rushed him to the Sweetwater Veterinarian Clinic in Agua Dulce.
Veterinarians ruled out a possible attack from another dog due to the location and nature of the injuries. They agree it could have been a bobcat that attacked Diesel.
The injured bulldog spent the majority of the afternoon in surgery as veterinarians worked to patch him up. The worst damage was to his genital and tail region, with one testicle having been torn off in the attack, and the second one requiring removal during surgery.
Apparently this is the sixth attack on a pet in this neighborhood, and Diesel’s owners are now trying to raise awareness of the danger among pet owners nearby.
They suspect that the attacking bobcat probably accessed the yard from an easement that extends along the backs of the homes on their street. It wouldn’t be hard for a large wildcat to get over the brick wall along the sides of the backyard.
Add to that the wildfires of 2007 and the spreading development of homes in the area, and it’s not hard to see how wildlife could be getting pushed into residential areas.
Diesel is happy to be safe at home again although he is still heavily medicated.
